El magnolio es el perfecto árbol ornamental, cuyas flores blancas de gran tamaño engalanan cualquier jardín envolviéndolo en su perfume. Esto motiva que sea el árbol ornamental más cultivado en el mundo.
Este árbol tiene hojas perennes y su nombre científico es Magnolia grandiflora, perteneciente al género Magnolia, compuesto por aproximadamente 120 especies arbóreas y arbustivas. Se pueden dividir en tres grupos, los magnolios de hoja perenne, los de hoja caduca y floración primaveral, y los de hoja caduca y floración estival.
El magnolio tiene una copa frondosa algo piramidal. Las hojas son elípticas brillantes y duras, puede alcanzar los 20m de altura, el tronco es gris oscuro. Las magnolias pueden alcanzar los 20cm de diámetro, son flores carnosas y blancas, con 6-12 pétalos y tres sépalos con aspecto petaloide. Los estambres tiene la parte superior color granate.
Los frutos son semejantes a piñas de apenas 10cm de largo y tienen semillas rojo escarlata, marrón o rosadas. Las semillas pueden recolectarse entre octubre y noviembre, y los árboles que se producen de ellas, tardan más en florecer.
Cuidados de las magnolias:
Los magnolios necesitan suelos profundos y bastante ácidos, bien drenados y con poco contenido calcáreo. En el jardín, se agrega perlita para facilitar el drenaje y sustrato castaño para subir el pH.
Es resistente y se desarrolla mejor en zonas de semi-sombra al resguardo del viento. Requiere mucho abono con macronutrientes, (nitrógeno, potasio y magnesio).
No necesita mucha poda, apenas para dar forma al árbol y para retirar las ramas secas.
Se pueden trasplantar en cualquier época del año, siempre cuidando de no dañar sus delicadas raíces.
Las magnolias son preferidas de los caracoles, por lo que debemos tener especial cuidado con ellos.
Este género es muy antiguo, pues se encontraron fósiles que indican una antigüedad de 20millones de años, por lo que se adaptaron a ser polinizados por escarabajos, debido a esto, sus flores tienen carpelos más duros.
